How to Upgrade Your VPS Plan or Add Resources

By Elliot, BearHost·

Outgrown your server? You do not need to order a new one and migrate. An upgrade keeps the same server, IP address, operating system and files.

Plan upgrade (more vCPU, RAM and disk)

  1. Open the server in your dashboard and go to the Upgrade tab.
  2. Choose the new plan. The price shown is the difference between plans, prorated to your next renewal date. From then on you pay the new plan's price.
  3. Confirm and pay the invoice (card, credit or crypto).

Within your first week, this means what you already paid counts in full toward the bigger plan; there is no reason to cancel and re-order.

Add resources only

The same Upgrade tab has Add resources: extra RAM and vCPU, extra NVMe storage, extra IPv4 addresses, and the Automated Backups add-on. Each is prorated and billed with the server.

Important: power cycle to apply the new size

New vCPU, RAM and disk sizes are set at the hypervisor and take effect on the next power cycle from the dashboard: click Stop, wait for the status to show Stopped, then Start. A reboot from inside the operating system is not enough. Your data is untouched by this.

On Linux, extra disk space appears as free space on the existing disk; grow the partition and filesystem (growpart and resize2fs on Ubuntu, or let cloud-init do it on reboot). On Windows, open Disk Management and extend the volume.

Extra IP addresses

Added IPs appear on the server page within a few minutes and need to be configured inside the OS (netplan on Ubuntu, network adapter settings on Windows). The server page shows the exact address and gateway. Reverse DNS for additional IPs is not offered.

Downgrades

Moving to a smaller plan is possible between billing periods as long as your data fits on the smaller disk. Open a ticket from the dashboard and we schedule it for your renewal date.

Changing the billing cycle

Switch between monthly, 3-month, 6-month and annual billing from the service's page. Longer cycles are cheaper: 10% off for 3 months, 15% for 6 months, 20% for annual, and fewer renewals to remember.
