Automated Backups: How They Work and How to Restore

By Elliot, BearHost·

By default a VPS has no backup. The server's disk is the only copy of your data, and a bad update, a wrong rm, ransomware or a failed disk means starting from zero. The Automated Backups add-on changes that for $4.99 a month per server.

What you get

  • A backup of the whole server (all disks) every 24 hours.
  • 7 rolling restore points, so you can go back up to a week.
  • Storage off-site, separate from the hypervisor your server runs on, encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • Back up now: an on-demand backup from the Backups tab, and inside the reinstall dialog, for before risky changes.
  • One-click restore from the Backup Manager in your dashboard. No ticket needed.

Backups are incremental after the first full copy, so they do not slow your server noticeably.

Adding backups to a server

  1. Open the server in your dashboard and go to the Backups tab (or click "Add backups" on the overview).
  2. Click Add backups. The Upgrade tab opens with Automated Backups selected.
  3. Confirm. You are charged pro-rata for the rest of the current billing period, then $4.99 a month with the server. Cancel any time from the same place.

The first backup runs at the next scheduled cycle, within 24 hours. If you need a copy right away, use Back up now once the add-on is active.

Restoring

  1. Open the Backups tab and click Open Backup Manager.
  2. Pick the restore point by date.
  3. Confirm. The server is stopped, its disk is overwritten with the backup, and it boots again. A full restore can take some minutes depending on disk size.

A restore replaces the current disk completely. Anything written after the restore point is lost, so if you only need a few files, consider restoring onto a second server or copying files off first.

Where are backups stored?

Off-site with Backblaze. The default region is in the United States. If your data must stay in the EU, tell us on a ticket before enabling the add-on and we set your server up in the EU region. See our GDPR and data processing page for details.

Deleting

Cancel the add-on from the Upgrade tab and backups stop. When a server is terminated, its backups are deleted within 30 days.

Which products

The add-on is available on all VPS plans (Cub to Titan, Linux and Windows). Shared cPanel and WordPress hosting have their own nightly server-side backups kept for 7 days, included in the plan.
